Nantahala Yurt Village

Never stayed in a Yurt? Then you are missing out. It is the perfect blend of camping and comfort!

WildWater Rafting treated our family to a night in their Yurt village. However, the fun that we had and our opinions are our own.

Recently may family and I were able to experience quite an adventure with WildWater rafting.  We were able to ride a train through the mountains and then go white water rafting down the Nantahala river.  The night before all of that we experienced our first every stay in a Yurt at the WildWater Nantahala Yurt village.  Now you may be asking, “What is a Yurt”?  Traditionally a yurt is a circular tent of felt or skins on a collapsible framework, used by nomads in Mongolia, Siberia, and Turkey.  The yurts we stayed in are a more updated version and are set up on wood platforms, have lattice walls and architectural grade canvas coverings.

yurtWhen we pulled up to our Yurts and the kids immediately saw the hammock and ran straight for it.  They were excited to see all there was to explore around the village.  We loved that our yurts were right on the shore of the cute little pond.  There are also yurts with a view of the Nantahala river.

yurt 2The yurts have such a fun look to them on the inside with the lattice walls.  They have a queen bed and a futon that folds out into a bed that can fit 2 more people.  The futon is a perfect place for kids to sleep as it would be a little snug for 2 adults.  I was impressed that everything we needed was in the yurt.  They are not air conditioned but the windows open and they have a box fan to help move the air around.  I was also excited to see each yurt had a flashlight since we forgot to bring ours.

yurt 4There are also a few books and some games in the yurts.  One had a chess set that my son was excited to see.  There is also a horseshoe pit set up on the grounds to enjoy.  Along with exploring the pond there are hiking trails down to the Nantahala river and a beautiful waterfall.

yurt 6We explored the waterfall hike.  It is only about 1/4 mile in length so it is a great little climb with amazing views and a great deck where you can look out a see the Nantahala river far below.

yurt 7It has been a long while since I could just sit and enjoy the outdoors and relax by the fire.  We had a blast walking around the pond, building and stoking the fire and roasting hot dogs and of course S’mores.  The yurts have a small refrigerator to keep your food cold which makes it easier to plan meals.  Hot dogs always taste the best roasted over a fire!

yurt 3There is plenty of seating provided also.  Tables and chairs on the decks and adirondack chairs for the fire and picnic table for each yurt.  It really made our trip easy.  I loved that it was like camping, but I had a real bed and a nice bathroom.

yurt 11The yurt village has a shared bathhouse, but it is not far from any of the yurts and it very nice.  There are 4 private bathrooms with a shower, toilet and a sink that are well kept.  There is also a laundry room for your convenience and a nice deck with more games available.

The weather was perfect for us while we were there and it was so rejuvenating to sit, relax and talk.  I feel like I keep saying that, but it was.  It was a perfect evening.

yurt 12Because we had to get the the train in the morning, we did a simple breakfast of cold cereal.  Of course I forgot bowls and spoons, but we had cups and I rummaged around in the van and found 6 plastic spoons.  It was great to wake up, enjoy a small fire and have breakfast in the great outdoors before heading off to our Raft & Rail adventure.

If you would like a fun camping experience that is really more like glamping I highly suggest checking out the Nantahala Yurt village.  It will be perfect for your family to rest, relax and get reacquainted with one another.  And how many people can say they have stayed in a yurt?

Please check out our white water adventure on the Nantahala river.

What a cool way to spend time with the family! I love the outdoors, but not a fan of sleeping on hard dirt – haha! A Yurt would be perfect for me! Looks so cozy :)

This looks like a really spiffy way to vacation. I love to sleep in new and unique places – hopefully with a roof and a great bed – like a cruise ship, a B&B – a houseboat or THESE!!

We saw these for the first time last year. I love the idea of having a little deck and not having to put up a tent every time we go camping. They look wonderful.
