Easy DIY Wood Nativity~ a simple craft that has rustic elegance.Creativity is something that lives inside of me and something that I must let out every now and then. I love to create. It makes my soul feel complete. Sometimes my creativity comes out when I cook or bake. Sometimes it is while playing the piano. Many times it is while I am dabbling away in the craft room.
There are times when I need to create and I am able to find a simple project that will fit my need. This easy DIY wood nativity was just what I needed the other day. I found some inspiration on Pinterest and tried out my own version. It is easy to make and has a simple elegance to it that I love. It also makes a wonderful, handmade Christmas gift. Below are the supplies I used and step by step instructions.
You will need:
2~ 1 1/4″ wooden ball knob (a wood ball with a flat bottom)
1~1/2″ round bead
1~ thick craft popsicle stick (cut to about 1 1/4″)
1~ wooden star (about 1 1/2″)
1~ slim wood craft stick (6 1/2″ long)
1~ 1×1 square dowel cut to 4″ long
1~ 1×1 square dowel cut to 3″ long
1~ 36″ length of twine
Sponge brushes or paint brushes
yellow craft paint
Blue craft paint~( I used Americana Colonial Blue)
Brown craft paint~( I used Americana Cocoa)
cream craft paint~ (I used Americana Buttermilk)
saw to cut the dowels
When you have all your pieces cut, sand any rough edges away.
~ paint each piece on the sides and top. Paint the 4″ block paint brown, & the 3″ block paint blue.
~Paint the popsicle stick cream and the star yellow. Each may need a second coat of paint.
~Let everything dry really well. I have learned that if I set them on waxed paper the wood pieces don’t get stuck to the paper.
When the blocks are completely dry sand the edges to take off just a little paint for a distressed look.
~glue the big wood balls onto the blocks and the small bead onto the popsicle stick~let set
~with a good amount of hot glue, glue Mary and Joseph together. Let set
~Glue the star to the top of the craft stick~ let set
~on the back, glue the base of the craft stick to the back of Mary and Joseph in the middle. ~let set
~glue the popsicle stick onto Mary at a slight angle
~ tie the twine around the couple about 3 times and tie a bow
You now have a beautiful handmade decor piece to display in you home or to give as a gift. With the supplies you need to buy you can make several at once. The 1×1 square dowel comes in a 36″ length. When you cut it you can get 5 sets of blocks out of it. To cut the popsicle stick and craft stick I just used scissors and some hand strength.
