Peppermint Oranges are a fun Christmas treat. Use a soft peppermint stick to drink out of an orange!
When I was growing up I remember my mom learning about how to drink orange juice straight from an orange with a peppermint stick. I remember being excited to try it, but didn’t know exactly how it would work. After I tried it for the first time it was such a wonderful taste and sensation I have remembered them ever since.
It is really easy to make a peppermint orange. The biggest tip to remember is to use a SOFT peppermint stick.
These are more of the old fashioned peppermint stick varieties. They are easy to find during the holidays and will always say “soft” on their labels. The soft peppermint sticks have more air pockets in them and allows for the juice to come through the peppermint stick like a straw.
To really get the orange nice and juicy, roll a few times with your hand on the counter pressing firmly. This allows the juice inside to break free.
Take a sharp knife and cut an X in the flesh of the orange big enough to fit your soft peppermint stick through.
Gently insert a soft peppermint stick into the X. You will need to press firmly, but gently and do a little twisting. You want the peppermint stick to go at least 1/2 way into the orange. Now bite the end off of the peppermint stick and start to suck.
It takes a little more work than a regular straw, but it is also fun to taste the orange juice and the peppermint together. Gently squeeze as you use the peppermint stick straw to get more juice out of the orange.
Peppermint oranges are fun to serve at Christmas parties. It is a unique drink and I promise your guests will remember it. The peppermint stick does break down inside the orange fairly quickly (about 1/2 and hour or so) so if you are serving them at a party you may want to have your guest make them themselves.

My kids are going to love this fun little snack. Another holiday tradition that is easy and fun to do with everyone. Thanks for sharing.
How fun! I’ve never thought to do this. Sounds so delicious!
Definitely something my kids are going to want to try! I love that you have so many memories of doing this growing up 🙂
I can’t believe this actually works! What a fun little party touch.
Looks like a fun combo. I’ve never heard of this. Is it hard to get the juice from the orange? Thanks for the tip about waiting to serve just before guests arrive.
It’s not very hard. It is good to use juicy oranges. It is more like sipping a little juice than drinking a whole glass of orange juice.
