We have a favorite memory in our family. Going to my husband’s grandmother’s house and getting lot’s of Grandma’s sugar cookies. We called her Mama Hunt and she always served the best southern food. She has been gone for over 6 years now, but I still can picture in my mind her table full of delicious vegetables, meat and cornbread.. And then, over on the sideboard would be piles of desserts. So much of her food was delicious. Her butterbeans, cornbread dressing, ham, corn and green beans, oh and her stuffed peppers! All of those were divine. And then her desserts: her coconut cake was amazing and there was even a homemade fruit cake that was surprisingly yummy. Mama Hunt’s chess pie has become a staple on our Thanksgiving table as well as her famous sugar cookies. I asked her for several of her recipes and she would willing give them. I would take them home and try them and they would not taste the same. They were close, but always off just a bit. The next time I would visit I would ask her about exactly how she fixed things and then she would realize she forgot to tell me an ingredient. She was always so nice about everything, that I never thought she did it deliberately, but I have always wondered.
Her sugar cookies were one of our favorites. Probably because she would always send us home with a big bag full and we would eat them all the way home. They made the two hour ride home much more enjoyable. She kept these cookies in her kitchen in a giant old pickle jar and I loved seeing it full of these sugar cookies. They are so crisp, delicious and buttery. We have tried to make them just like she did and we have figured out that the longer you leave the dough in the refrigerator to chill the more crisp the cookies are which is part of their deliciousness. If you need a delicious, simple cookie to share this Christmas please make grandma’s sugar cookies. This recipe will stay in your collection for sure!
